Discover the Surprising Secret that makes Vishen Lakhiani my Hero

Vishen Lakhiani Bio

Vishen Lakhiani

Vishen Lakhiani is an entrepreneur, a New York Times best selling author and activist born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1976. He was married to Kristina Lahkiani with 2 kids.

As an expert in meditation and personal transformation, he founded Mindvalley, a global education movement that counts over 2 million students worldwide. In the last decade, he created a transformational festival called “A-fest”, Mindvalley Quest (an industry-leading learning platform), and the MindValley University. His mind training techniques and apps have been used by some of the most famous athletes, CEOs, and many others all over the world. He equally has given talks in companies like Facebook, Google, and the United Nations.

Now all of this sounds impressive, but what stands out even more about Vishen’s success story is how he found his path. He was born an awkward kid with poor eyesight, bad skin, and Asperger’s in Malaysia. A country with a very poor education system giving no room for creativity. Very young he felt out of place in an environment full of what he calls “Brules” or Bullshit Rules which he defines as “rules we adopt to simplify our understanding of the world which are not necessarily true.”

After graduating high school, he moved to the USA where he obtained a BSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1999. Though he struggled to graduate (school really wasn’t his thing), he nonetheless got a job offer at Microsoft. Now for most engineers that will be a great opportunity, but Vishen quit 11 weeks in. He wasn’t happy with what he was doing and to that he says;

“Looking back, I realize I chose computer engineering because I assumed it was the “safe and responsible” way forward. But I was miserable at my job and quit after 11 weeks realizing that “jobs” much like education just didn’t suit me.”

Vishen Lakhiani

At 24, he moved to Silicon Valley to catch his big break but things did not exactly work out as planned. He failed epically to launch his first startup idea, lost everything, and was flat broke. He later was able to get a job but had to work extremely hard to make commissions to survive and pay his bills renting a friend’s couch at $100 a month. Completely stressed out he decided to look up meditation on Google and this marked the beginning of an incredible journey. Thanks to meditation his productivity levels switched up, he got 3 promotions in 4 months. Amazing right? Just by reshaping how to use his mind.

He quit Silicon valley to study meditation and began traveling the world to teach and deepen his mastery of human development. This led to the creation of MindValley in 2004.

Vishen’s ultimate goal is to transform the world’s educational system which today is becoming obsolete. By combining technology, science, and spirituality he intends to reshape the future of education.

Mindvalley Quest offers innovative programs on personal growth called “Quests”. All powered by a groundbreaking online learning platform that regroups community and daily microlearning to transform you in ways traditional learning never could. With programs that focus on the mind, performance, body, soul, entrepreneurship, relationships, etc. Vishen’s goal is to elevate the key systems that shape humanity’s future.

Vishen Lakhiani’s Four Rules of Life

In between 2013 to 2015, ten years into running his company, he had to deal with the most trying moments of his life.

In 2013 his accountant stole $250,000 from his company. Six months later he lost a 5 million dollars’ worth partnership. Another six months down the line, his best friend stole $150,000 from his bank account and disappeared. Hold on, there’s more! Come December 2014, his company was bleeding so much that he couldn’t afford a payroll that year. Vishen sold his car and his high-level executives agreed to not be paid for the rest of the employees to get paid. February 2015 his new COO stole $100,000 from the already struggling company.

At this point, most people will be at their breaking point and Vishen was, but guess what? The universe was not done yet. A few months later the company handling MindValley’s email marketing got acquired. During the transition process due to some technical error, MindValley will lose 40% of its clientele due to emails not getting to customers. This represented a steady loss of $100,000 monthly. Now imagine this happening to you.

Unlike most people, Vishen was able to use all these negative experiences to rethink and reshape his business and his life and pulled through. He developed 4 rules that helped him rebuild his life and rethink the structure of MindValley and made it as successful as it is today.

Rule #1

Transformation– Your work should mean more than just work. Rather your work is the greatest vehicle for your evolution. Failure doesn’t matter, only growth does.

Rule #2

Envisioning– Introspection is meant for you to emerge and shake up the world. Dream big for your problems to become small. Keep envisioning a vision for yourself. Be a creator.

Rule #3

Unity– Your life is not only about you. Rather your life is about the lives of those you touch.

Rule #4

Love– We do our best work when we care for each other and are cared for.

Vishen Lakhiani’s 6 Phase Meditation

With MindValley Vishen has spent 15 years reimagining the human experience and exploring the science of human potential. He created the 6 Phase Meditation program first for himself to help him cope with his busy career while at Silicon Valley. Today this amazing program is used by other great people all over the world and guess what? It is available to you for free on MindValley.

This meditation program follows 6 steps which are: Consciousness, Gratitude, Negative Charge, Visualizing your perfect life, Visualizing your perfect day, and Calling upon any High Power for Blessings.

The goal of this program is to learn: greater self-love & acceptance, sense of limitless abundance, improve your quality of life, choose happiness, feel more connected to life, be more compassionate, strengthen your stress resilience, and learn to forgive.

Vishen Lakhiani’s Quotes

Two different paths to life growth: kensho and satori. Kensho is growth by pain. Satori is growth by awakening

We shouldn’t do things so we can be happy. We should be happy so we can do things

All of us have a child within who never received all the love and appreciation we deserved. We can’t go back and fix the past. But we can take responsibility to heal ourselves now by giving ourselves the love and appreciation we once craved. You can help heal your own inner child

Too many people trap themselves in the chains of realistic goals because they refuse to see beyond the HOW. Don’t worry about the HOW. Start with the WHAT and the WHY. When you know what you want to bring forth in the world and WHY you want it, choose it. Then take whatever action intuition guides you toward taking

Live life as though everything is rigged in your favor

Stop postponing your happiness. Be happy now. Your thoughts and beliefs do create your reality, but only when your present state is joyful

Have big goals—but don’t tie your happiness to your goals. You must be happy before you attain them

I Tried the Regular Path, It Wasn’t For Me

Why I admire Vishen so much

The thing with Vishen’s approach is that it is refreshing. His courses demystify meditation practices and make them so simple.

I started meditating when I had a free trial of his 6 Phase Meditation. It was so practical that I started feeling better and seeing results immediately in my life.

Ever since then I have continued meditating because it is now fun even though it had always seemed like a chore to me before I discovered Mindvalley.

Right now I have moved to the Silva Method of meditation which I also bought from Mindvalley and I must say it is epic.

So there you have it, everything inspiring about VISHEN LAKHIANI. I hope you liked this article, let me know who you’ll like to read about next.

Share your thoughts with me. Who do you admire? Maybe I’ll do a feature on them! I have similar blog posts about great thought leaders in the menu item THOUGHT LEADERS. Be sure to check it out
