 Affirmations are short, positive declarative statements that are repeated regularly to induce a mind shift. Their goal is to help the mind integrate new positive thought patterns that will help create positive habits to achieve your goals. How affirmations work

By reciting positive affirmations regularly the brain develops stronger neuronal connections and chemical pathways that are responsible for forming new habits. At the start, it may sound awkward and untrue but over time the subconscious picks it up and conveys the feeling associated with the affirmation. Your mind then works to manifest the positive thought in your life.

Let’s take an example; the affirmation “I am confident”. Reciting this out loud in front of your mirror if you are struggling with self-confidence at first may make you feel weird but the more you speak it the more you believe and experience a surge of power within yourself. A form of certainty that changes the way you see yourself over time. 

My experience with affirmations started at a time when I felt helpless in life and weak in many ways. I started telling myself every time when I was in front of a mirror that I AM STRONG. At first I stayed weak, for quite a while but I still kept boosting up myself with this affirmation. Fast forward to today, affirmations coupled with other self-development tools found on this blog have developed me to the point that I am REALLY STRONG. I laugh out loud when people erroneously say I’m weak cos I am now a super strong women, ready to blaze though life! Oh let’s get back to the article…

Benefits of practicing affirmations

Positive affirmations ultimately target negative-self-talk which is a constant with human beings. Most often we let our insecurities get the best of us and talk ourselves down and this starts at a very early stage in life. Societal standards and the desire to fit in constantly keep us worried about our appearances, how much money we make, people’s opinions about us…etc. This creates an atmosphere for negative emotions such as self-doubt, anger, jealousy, envy to shape how we see ourselves and the world. By creating an affirmation routine you will be able to reprogram your mind to see more positivity and get rid of limiting beliefs.

How to build an affirmation routine

1)    Write down your negative beliefs

Changing your mindset starts by identifying the crippling thoughts you usually have. Be honest with yourself and think of all the negative statements you have based on the aspect of your life you want to work on. Writing them down physically will help create a connection between your mind and your thoughts.

2)    Create corresponding positive affirmations

For each negative thought, you have listed down create a counter positive affirmation. Do not worry if it doesn’t feel authentic while you do it, just write it down. Make sure you state them in the present tense no future tense: “I am”, “I have” and avoid negative formulations like “I do not”, “I am not”, and “I will not”. This is because when your subconscious hears your affirmation, it registers only the adjectives and verbs and does not consider the word NOT.

3)    Practice your affirmations daily

Most people set out time in the morning as soon as they wake up to practice their affirmations. This helps set the mood for the day. Dedicate time where you can be alone, speak loud, and with confidence. Repeat each affirmation at least five times and focus on the feeling these positive words send through you. Throughout the day repeat your affirmations whenever negative thoughts creep up on you. My current favorite affirmations are:

  • You girl, are a winner in this life.
  • You deserve the best this world has to offer.
  • You are awesome/powerful/beautiful/gorgeous/strong.
  • You have everything it takes to live the life of your dreams.

4)    Choose your affirmation practice

There is no wrong way of practicing affirmations really but here are three common ways most people use to harness the power of this technique.

●       Writing affirmations

Writing your affirmations is a great way of manifesting them. It helps to keep you motivated and focused on your goal. Affirmations are usually associated with journaling to help raise self-awareness and pay attention to your feelings to stay aligned with your purpose.

Tip: Practice writing goal-specific affirmations.

●       Reciting affirmations

This is a great alternative if you’re looking to boost your self-confidence.  Recite your affirmations while standing in front of your mirror.

●       Embody your affirmations

Another powerful of using affirmations to change your life is by taking direct action. Embody your affirmation. Let’s circle back to our example with the simple affirmation “I am confident”. When using this affirmation think of what you think a confident person looks like and behaves then replicate it.
