06 Nov An Exclusive and Complete dive into what makes Mel Robbins Special
Mel Robbins Bio
Mel Robbins is a TV host, motivational speaker, best selling author, serial entrepreneur and CNN legal analyst. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1968 and is married to Christopher Robbins. She is worth $12 million. Before her speaking career she had earned a law degree from Boston College Law school and worked as a criminal defense attorney in New York City.
Mel has all these accolades but she was not always this driven and successful. She says her life was a mess at 41. She hit rock bottom in 2008 when she lost her job, her husband’s restaurant started failing and she was deep into debt. She also was fast losing her sobriety. It was so bad that every time her alarm got her up she was hit by anxiety and always pressed the snooze button. She wanted things to change in her life but felt powerless in causing the change. That is when she discovered the 5 second rule by watching a rocket launch on TV while drowning her sorrows in a bottle of Bourbon.
This one rule helped her improve her life to the point that she made the most viewed TEDx talk ever, became the most sought-after female speaker and worked with leading brands.

The 5 Second Rule
One day while watching a TV commercial, Mel saw a rocket take off and she thought to herself “why don’t I just launch out of bed every morning like this rocket?”
The next morning when her alarm clock rang she counted backwards from 5 to 1 and launched out of bed. She also applied this 5 second rule to many important things and she consistently started getting things done. This boosted her confidence.
She explains that this rule works by closing the gap between us thinking of what needs to get done and actually doing it. Basically everyone already knows what they should do and why they should do it, I mean, we could Google search how to do anything and come up with thousands of website giving a step-by-step list of how to.
She discovered the 5 second rule and put it to work before working on CNN, having her TEDx talk and writing any of her books.
She explains that if you feel an impulse to do anything important, you need to act within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea automatically. Like you see people dancing and you feel the impulse to join them but you start pulling back? 5-4-3-2-1 then jump in before your brain has the chance to kill the idea!
This rule can actually be used to accomplish any goal, one action at a time. It works by activating the part of the brain called the pre-frontal cortex which helps us act with courage, make decisions, learn new behaviors and think strategically. It is a starting ritual which helps override bad habits. In science, it is known as “metacognition”.
Mel Robbins Ted Talk
This TED talk is the most watched Ted talk ever. It was one of her firsts and she actually says she cringes when she hears how shrill her voice was but I believe the content of the talk is everything!
She tells us about how to get what we want. She warns against us always saying we are fine and convincing ourselves of that when we could identify and face our real issues.
You have life-changing ideas for a reason, and not just to torture yourself…Mel Robbins
She says we’ll never ever feel like changing. She shows a practical way to come face to face with the physical energy required to make a change; get up 30 minutes earlier than usual and jump up to start your day. Then, you’ll feel the full force of what is needed to cause change in your life. The first 3 seconds will suck, badly. But after that you’ll feel great.

The Mel Robbins Show
Mel has spent the last decades elevating, coaching and motivating millions around the world by providing them with practical strategies to help them push through to their goals. Her style is direct, practical and no-nonsense. Her show helps viewers see what is holding them back and shows them how to break free
Watching her show, you can see how much preparation she puts into it to be able to identify causes and problems in the lives of her guests and give them just the right solutions for that.
Unfortunately, SONY Pictures TV announced that her show will end after its first season due to weak ratings. I believe that self-development has not yet become main-stream enough for such a show to gather momentum.
